On the back of the pre-procedure for the colonoscopy, there is a liquid diet guide. I scanned the page thinking that I would embedded it here, but default WordPress does not have a PDF block option, and my scanner only outputs PDFs. Good thing it auto-OCRs the document so I can copy/paste most of it.
Do NOT take any RED, ORANGE or PURPLE colored products
You MAY have BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW & APPLE JUICE color as clear liquids
Ugh, more of the ALL CAPS, bold, and underline style of formatting. Further down the page, they list several FOOD GROUPS:
Fruit Juices
Apple, white grape, white cranberries, pear and pineapple (no pulp)
Beverages
Sodas such as Ginger Ale, Sprite, 7up, Sierra Mist, Mountain Dew, green tea, Gatorade, PowerAde, Propel, Kool Aid, lemonade (Crystal Lite, Country Time Lemonade or Minute Maid) must be strained (NO PULP) and drinking water. NO COFFEE at all
Soup
CLEAR chicken, vegetable broth or bouillon
Desserts/Sweets
Popsicles, frozen juice bars, flavored JELLO, Italian ice, sorbet and hard clear candy (jolly ranchers as an example)
Seasoning
Lemon juice, honey, sugar
The closest item to “food” is probably chicken broth, although I’ve never had it by itself versus as part of a soup or dish. I’m getting some white grape juice and we have some Sprite/7up in the house. Looks like I can’t have any of the dialysis protein drinks. We also have lots of JELLO power so I can make a lot of that, but it’s mainly cherry or strawberry flavored so it’s RED.
I’ll probably just drink water or suck on ice for the next 24 hours.
I’m sure my three readers know that I go to Raising Cane’s for lunch after dialysis a lot. I’ve been going to the restaurant in Orange on Tustin Avenue since I thought that was the closest one. I just found out there is another restaurant in Santa Ana that is a lot closer to the hospital, and a bit closer to my house. Also, if I want to get food then charge my car, it’s also close to the Tesla Superchargers at the Santa Ana Main Place. I think I’ll go try the other location tomorrow.
Evidently there are a lot of locations in LA/Orange County now. I thought there were only two in Orange and Downey.
The highlighted marker is the Orange/Tustin Avenue location
Lately, I’ve been getting just the chicken fingers and sauce since I don’t like their bread and coleslaw. I’m also trying to lose fluid so not getting the drink means I won’t drink it. Finally, their fries are just mediocre so not getting any is fine with me. I usually park in the lot right after getting my order and eating the fingers right away while it’s still hot and burning my tongue. So good though…
My dialysis nutritionist told me to stop losing weight. She said it’s not good to be too skinny for the transplant procedure. I remember the vascular surgeon commenting that I was too fat during the peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion surgery but that worked out okay. Since I’ve always been overweight as far as I can remember, it’s weird to have a medical person tell you you’re too skinny. She told me to eat more meat and protein so that when they remove excess fluid, I don’t lose more “dry” weight.
My nephrologist lowered my weight again to 78.0 kg since that is my latest post-dialysis weight for several days now. We’re removing about 3 liters of fluid per session and I’m trying to drink less so we get the last bit of excess fluid in my lungs and lower legs. I have not heard back regarding results of the last echocardiogram but it should show a lot less fluids in my lungs compared to a month ago.
Tri-tip from Stonefire Grill
I’m trying to eat more, which again, is a weird feeling. I ordered a large meal from Stonefire Grill tonight; my parents are going to pick it up right now. I’m also drinking a protein shake from Nepro or Novasource daily in case I don’t get enough from meals. I also have to start exercising more, otherwise all I’ll gain is fat, which is not good for my “new” heart. Sigh… life is so complicated.
My only task for Thanksgiving dinner was to go pick up an apple pie. I pre-ordered the pie from Polly’s Pies in Santa Ana. It was $16 and I was supposed to pick it up today at 10:30 am after dialysis. When I got to the restaurant, there was a huge line out the door with at least 50 people. This was the pre-order line. I don’t know if they even have extra pies for people that didn’t pre-order. Anyway, I got in line with my mask and it took about 30 minutes to get my pie. I see people walking out with 5 or 6 pies. Excuse me, how many people are going to be at your Thanksgiving dinner? We are only meeting with my sister’s family so seven people in total. I’m guess there will be a few block parties and possibly superspreader events. Ugh.
Pie line. I was almost to the front by now. There were probably 40-50 people behind me in line. Inside the restaurant, there were tables with pies piled 5-6 boxes high.
Hopefully this time next year I will still be alive from my bypasses, and have received a kidney transplant so life can go back to normal.
Normal = does not suck
Remember I was two weeks out of the hospital, not really mobile, and in the dark about a lot of health related things. A year later, things are better but still no transplant. Life is still kind of sucky but I’m not dead yet. Interpolating from some discreet data points, probably 35-40% of dialysis patients die after 3 1/2 years. Again, that’s probably skewed towards older patients but it’s depressing to think about.
I can’t remember what happened last year but we probably didn’t do anything for Thanksgiving. I don’t remember bringing my walker to my sister’s house. This year, I’m a lot more mobile and pretty much 90% recovered from the bypass surgery. We typically meet at my sister’s house during Thanksgiving since their house is bigger and they have a nicer kitchen. We either have a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, ham, and side dishes, or go full Chinese and have Taiwanese hot pot. I think we’re having turkey this year as my sister asked me to bring an apple pie from somewhere.
We use an electric hot plate instead of the chimney pot
This year is also different because of COVID-19. Orange County is a shitshow and in the midst of a third wave of infections. The CDC released some recommendations on having a safe Thanksgiving but it seems like people are still going to travel. I guess we’re not 100% safe either since we’re two households. I’ll probably wear a mask this time; typically we don’t masks when we meet up with my sister’s family.
We had dinner from Stonefire Grill last night. It’s the first time I’ve eaten there. I was getting food for someone in my church cell group that just had a baby. They provided a list of restaurants and I chose Stonefire Grill. Since I was getting their dinner, I just placed a second order for my family. It’s a “typical” American restaurant and the food was pretty good. I ordered the 1/2 chicken-1/2 rib meal that comes with salad and breadsticks. I also got some mashed potatoes and a huge carrot cake for dessert.

Couple of observations. I’m surprised at the sodium content of the 1/2 lemon garlic chicken. I thought it was kind of bland and needed a to of the lemon garlic sauce to give it flavor. My dad mentioned that the ribs were kind of fatty so it’s surprising that there’s more fat in the chicken than in the ribs. Our meal came out to ~$35 and there was a lot of leftover. I ate most of the salad since that can’t keep once you mixed the dressing.
I think I’m hooked. My parents bought a few bags of this snack from Costco and I just ate most of one bag this week by myself.
Also available on Amazon
Here is more information, including nutrition, from the manufacturer. Since it’s a sweet snack made from coconut, there’s quite a bit of saturated fat and sugars. I was more worried about potassium and phosphorus. The nutritional information says there is very little potassium, and coconut seems to be okay on phosphorus. I also didn’t see any phosphate compounds on the ingredient list so I’m hoping it won’t spike my labs later next month.
Just got home from the podiatrist. Since my cut is at the bottom of my foot, he prefers to leave stitches in for about three weeks. So basically nothing happened today, although he did say it was healing nicely. I have to go back in about another 10 days to have him remove the stitches. He also said I could wear regular shoes if I could get my foot in.
Since I didn’t eat before the appointment, I thought I would go get some lunch. I tried going to Raising Cane’s as I haven’t been there for a week. Even at 2:30 pm in the afternoon, the drive-thru line was totally full and backed on to the main road. I didn’t feel comfortable waiting while blocking traffic, so I kept on driving. It looked like the line would take 20+ minutes as well. On the way home, I tried pulling into a nearby In-N-Out. This one is super busy too, and they keep changing how the drive-thru line is configured. There appeared to be lots of cars in line, and I didn’t even know where the line starts. Defeated, I drove across the street to Carl’s Jr. and got a Famous Star burger. Not the best meal you can get for $5 but I was getting hungry. Where did all these people come from on a Friday afternoon? Late lunch? Early dinner?
How come nothing ever looks like the promotional photos?
My mom must have really liked the Costco Beef Stroganoff since she told me to heat up the other half of the package for dinner tonight. We also finished the salad package from yesterday so we had the exact two items for dinner as we did yesterday. She also thought we wouldn’t have enough noodles left in the package so she cooked some Chinese noodles and ate that with the sauce instead.
I managed to save the packaging so here is the nutritional information for the Beef Stroganoff:
For dinner tonight, we had an all Costco menu. I heated up the packaged Beef Stroganoff and mixed up the Asian Cashew Chopped Salad we bought a few days ago.
The serving count for each was pretty high: 8 for the beef and 7 for the salad, so I only prepared half of each package. I was also worried that my parents wouldn’t like the Stroganoff so I didn’t want to heat up everything. It turned out it tasted kind of like the IKEA meatballs and we ate everything I prepared. That means I have enough left over for another meal later in the week.
For a long time, I’ve been eating ok during dinnertime. That basically means no vomiting. However, tonight I threw up during dinner again. This time is was some stir fried chicken with mushrooms and snow peas. I took a small bite of the chicken and there was a strong flavor of something. Anyway, all the food I ate up to that point came back up quickly and I had to run to the bathroom so I didn’t throw up all over the floor.
Afterwards, I decided to try on of the sample Novasource protein drinks the renal nutritionist gave me. I drank the Cafe Mocha flavored one and it was pretty good. Unlike Nepro, Novasource also included a straw and a poke-through hole at the top of the carton. That naturally restricts fluid flow so you drink slower. I still had some diarrhea afterwards but it was a pretty mild case. Since I was running low on Nepro, I ordered a case of the Cafe Mocha Novasource since I don’t see my eating problems going away soon.
My renal dietician came by briefly during dialysis to ask about my weight loss. The nephrologist lowered my dry weight again to 80.5 kg, and I left dialysis at 80.1 kg. My ankles are definitely a bit thinner, even after sitting, and my ending blood pressure was in range without taking the extra NIFEdipine pill. Maybe the “new” me does only weigh 175 pounds.
I told the nutritionist that I was experiencing diarrhea about half the time after drinking a protein shake, whether it’s Nepro (renal) or other brands. She said that this happens to other patients too, and to drink it more slowly. She also mentioned a second renal protein shake brand call Novasource from Nestlé. Like Nepro, there are three flavors: Vanilla, Strawberry, and Cafe Mocha. I also got two sample shakes and a discount order form from her.
Let’s compare Novasource Strawberry and Nepro Mixed Berry:
The two nutritional information charts had different formats and order so I chose the ones that I usually list in random order. The two products look fairly similar; both have low potassium and phosphorus compared to regular, non-renal protein shakes. I hope the Novasource shakes taste better. I’ve only really had the Mixed Berry Nepro, and have gotten to dislike the flavor somewhat. I used to drink them at room temperature but a lot of people online have suggested drinking it cold. It’s better cold, but the chalky aftertaste is still there.
The list price for Novasource on their website is $108 for a case of 27. The cheapest price I found on Amazon is ~$90 for 27 including shipping. The nutritionist gave me an order form directly from Nestlé that has each case for $64. Similarly, Nepro usually sells for $92 for a case of 24 but the discount price is $57. Question is why anyone would buy and drink these shakes if they’re not on dialysis?
I went out and got a Jersey Mike’s sandwich for lunch. I usually just get the turkey sub but this time, I opted for the Club Supreme sub sandwich. It sounds more impressive than it really is. Just roast beef, turkey, and bacon.
I’m not going to talk about nutrition but rather weight. Jersey Mike’s sandwiches are pretty heavy. Not sure if it’s high water content in their deli meats or the vegetables, but for me, any fluid component is added to my weight. I also drank a can of soda (like I should not have), and my post lunch weight was 82.1 kg. That feels like a lot. I had one of those Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast sandwiches plus a small cup of decaf tea so everything together was about 1.0 kg or 2.2 pounds. Since a lot of the food is make of water, all that needs to come out tomorrow morning during dialysis through the machine. I think I left at 81.1 kg Saturday, so assuming the scales are somewhat similar, I’ll probably have ~2 kg to remove, and that’s okay for the three day of fluid removal.
==========
Just to reiterate how a lapse of self-control affects fluid balance. The can of soda was 355 mL and the Zojiroshi vacuum mug I used for the tea is 0.34 liters. Together that’s about 700 mL or about 1.5 pounds of fluids. Most people would just pee it out later but I can’t so assuming some of it is metabolized or lost through sweat, that adds ~0.5 kg to my fluid removal tomorrow.
So after almost buying the killerJimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches, we did get the muffin sandwiches, which had more reasonable nutritional numbers. The muffin sandwiches came in a package of four and cost $7. That’s not too bad since it’s basically a clone of a McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin with Egg. The McDonald’s app says it costs $3.90 or $15.60 for four, which is about 2x the price of the Jimmy Dean frozen version.
I think I’ve had the McDonald’s version before and they both taste about the same. The major difference is that after microwaving the frozen sandwich, the English muffin becomes a bit rubbery and hard to chew. Going forward, we are going to just buy the sausage patties and some cheddar cheese singles. English muffins are a few dollars for a lot at Costco, and I can fry up an egg. I like eggs more scrambled anyway.
McDonald’s website also lists Potassium contents, which was 2% for this sandwich. I guess the numbers are kind of similar except for the cholesterol content. Maybe it’s because McDonald’s is grilling everything live while the frozen sandwich is microwaved? Also, the % DV values are not very consistent so likely they are using different DV standards.
Now looking back at the nutritional information on Jimmy Dean’s website regarding their Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches, the number have to be wrong. Everything seems like they are 4x what you would expect looking at the same info for the sausage muffin sandwich. Also, the nutritional information says each sandwich is 406 g or about a pound. No way that’s right since that’s huge, and the box says the the same value for four. Box also says 10 g of protein per sandwich while the website says 41 g. Website probably is showing the nutritional information for the entire box of four sandwiches. Probably need to go to the store and see what’s on the box.
==========
Ah, should haver read the reviews at the website. There are 128 reviews, most very positive, and a few does call them out for the errors on the nutritional information chart. Now I want to try them but it also looks like they’re hard to find nowadays.
Since COVID-19 hit, I have not eaten inside a restaurant. Any prepared food we get has been take-out. This is especially true for lunch after dialysis. As I’m already outside the house, it’s more convenient just to pick something up on the way home, or eat it while Supercharging my car. I couldn’t sleep because of the pressure my chest, so I pulled up Mint to see how much I spent where in the past six months:

Others with one or two transactions include Victory Diner, Holdaak Chicken, Pei Wei, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Yoshinoya, Taco Bell, John’s Place, and In-N-Out Burger. No surprise the restaurant with the most transactions is Raising Cane’s since I’ve been going there twice a week recently. Now that I can order just chicken fingers a la carte, I don’t need to get their combo with stuff I don’t really want.
If I go three times a week and average $10, then it’s about $120/month. I guess that’s not too bad since otherwise I would just skip lunch, like I often do on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays. That’s okay too except I’m losing too much weight and probably need to eat more (and better).
Well, this is a crappy post for #800 but whatever. It’s been a few days since I went walking outside so I decided to do so tonight. It didn’t work out that well. Fitbit said I only walked 0.35 miles total, which means I ran out of breath after less than 1/5 of a mile. I ended up turning around but had to sit down for a bit on the way back. I also felt dizzy and almost fell trying to sit down on the curb.
I’ve been having more difficulty breathing this weekend. My post dialysis weight is super low but maybe I drank too much already? The two scales are different but I left dialysis at 83.2 kg. I just weighed my self at home and the scale said 84.7 kg. Maybe I did drink 1.5 L already and all of it went to my lungs. During a nap this afternoon, the clicking noise and sensation from my chest was super noticeable. Now I’m worried about how it will affect the Lexiscan test this coming Tuesday.
Also, since I felt dizzy, I thought my blood pressure may be low. Nope… it was totally the opposite. When I got home, I also measured my BP and it was 223/105. WTH? Those seem like fake numbers. I just took some medication at dinnertime too. How can my BP fluctuate by over 100 points day-to-day? Is it all fluid overload? I say this as I’m about to drink a Nepro shake. My meals today have been pretty random so I think I need a protein boost.
Since I have to get up at 4:30 am three times a week to get to dialysis by 5:30 am, breakfast is always an issue. The dialysis center wants patients to eat before the session in case our blood sugar drops too much during the session. I’ve been alternating between eating cereal with almond milk, and just toast with some jam or peanut butter. There’s not enough time to prepare something more elaborate unless I want to get up even earlier.
I know there are pre-cooked breakfast sandwiches and Jimmy Dean seems to be the most common brand. I thought they were available at Costco but I didn’t see anything on their website. Since my parents were going grocery shopping today, I asked them to pick some up at our local Albertson’s (supermarket). I went to the Jimmy Dean website to send them the specific sandwich, and saw the nutritional information for the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit sandwich.
Wow! When I first saw the numbers, I thought they screwed up and listed the values for an entire box of sandwiches. Nope. Just one. How can a breakfast sandwich contain so much fat and sodium? Forget dialysis patients… normal people shouldn’t be eating this for breakfast either. It’s also pretty big: 400 g is almost a pound. I think I’ll stick to my two pieces of toast for now. I told my parents that I can’t eat this so don’t buy it.
The nutritional information chart does not give any information on potassium and phosphorus, the two things dialysis patients need to look out for. Judging by the ingredient list, there’s probably a lot of both in the sandwich as well. Also, that’s a lot of chemicals in the ingredient list.
==========
Weird. I had given up on the entire line of breakfast sandwiches but decided to look at some other products on the website. The nutritional value for other sandwiches are much more reasonable. They’re probably never going to be classified as “healthy” but it’s much better. I’m guessing it’s the bacon in the first sandwich since the rest are made with sausage.
For the sausage muffin (Egg McMuffin clone!), it’s only 130 g so it’s much smaller, and only has 350 calories, 20 g of total fat, and 760 mg of sodium. Again, not great, but not a widow-maker like the other sandwich.
I scheduled a meeting with Chase Bank at 11:00 am today so I got some lunch at Carl’s Jr. across from the hospital, and went to charge my car for about 30 minutes. The Supercharger only had three stalls occupied so I was able to charge at ~80 kW for most of the session.
I’m pretty cheap and not too hungry so I got one of the more inexpensive meals: California Classic. It was ok. I think the Famous Star I got last time tasted better but was a couple dollars more. I think CJ is trying to compete with In-N-Out’s Double Double with this burger but it’s not really the same.
Nutritional information for the California Classic burger:
I also had a medium unsweetened ice tea so that probably didn’t add much to anything on the list. Nutritionally, it compares pretty closely to the Double Double except the DD has a lot more sodium. Also, I just had several bouts of diarrhea. I’m not 100% sure it’s Carl’s fault but the burger combo was the only thing I ate after dialysis. I weighed myself after all the water came out and it was 83.3 kg at 11.3% fat. I may still yet get down to 80.0 kg before the kidney transplant surgery.
Uh oh, another not-so-healthy choice for lunch. My parents went out shopping for groceries today and they’re picking up Korean fried chicken from Furai Chicken for lunch. They’re going to the one inside Zion Market in Irvine. There is no website for that location but here is one from the same chain in La Cresenta. I’ve had their chicken several times and it’s pretty good and not too greasy, though it’s still probably not good for you.
For half a fried chicken, Furai charges $13; a whole chicken is $23. Compared to KFC, an 8-piece bucket goes for $17. I don’t know how the two compare but I feel the 8-piece is probably an entire chicken. It does look like Furai is quite a bit more expensive than KFC but it is better tasting than KFC.
There’s no nutritional information for Furai on the web but since KFC is a national chain, I think they are required to provide it. For four pieces of original recipe KFC fried chicken, here is the nutritional information:

Whoa! I guess one of the colonel’s secret recipe ingredients is salt. There’s almost 3 grams of salt in the breading on just four pieces of fried chicken. What if you don’t eat the chicken skin? I wonder if that cuts down on the fat and the salt? I went back and looked up the nutritional information for KFC’s grilled chicken and it does appear slightly healthier than the fried chicken.
I think my parents are buying an entire fried chicken from Furai. I’ll try to keep lunch to two pieces.
I don’t know why this tooth extraction seems more painful than the previous ones. Maybe they’re all the same and things dull with time. Anyway, last night was pretty bad. I took a nap in the afternoon after dialysis and when I woke up for dinner, the socket was hurting pretty badly. It hurt so much that I couldn’t eat anything for dinner, even though it was pretty good take-out from Tasty Garden in Irvine.
After “dinner” which I didn’t eat, I took another Percocet pill to try and dull the pain. I’m down to only 3-4 pills now and they’re pretty much non-replaceable. It took a lot of effort post-surgery just to get these few pills. My mom has a stash of Norco, which is a combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone. All these pain medications seems to be acetaminophen plus an opioid. I haven’t used her pills yet.
The pain is more manageable this morning. I haven’t taken anything yet, not even regular Tylenol. The sutures are still bothering me as I can feel them with my tongue and I’m afraid they’ll come loose each time I eat anything. I’ve been cutting up food into smaller pieces and using my left side of the mouth to chew. I think this will be the new normal for eating now.
