Freshly Meal #2

With only five days to eat five more meals, I tried another one tonight. ( wasn’t too adventurous so I heated up the Chicken Teriyaki.

The pictures on the website led me to believe that there would be two compartments: one for the chicken + rice, and one for the vegetables. Nope. It was all mixed into one. This is what it looked like coming out of the microwave oven:

I only ended up eating three bites. It looked, smelled, and tasted terrible. The rice was not cooked (hard) even thought I following the heating instructions exactly. Like all microwaved teriyaki dishes, it had this strong odor, not at all like teriyaki dishes from restaurants. I ended up nibbling on the chicken pieces and almost threw up again. After 15 minutes, I tossed about 95% of the dish. I would give it 1 or 2 out of 10 and I’ve also decided I’m done with Freshly. I’m not ordering from them ever again.

I guess the nutritional information doesn’t matter that much if you don’t actually eat any of the dish.

Possible Ablation Failure

Everything has been fine until this evening. After throwing up again at dinner, I tried taking a few measuments with my EKG. The heart rate is pretty normal but the beat is irregular again. The EKG analysis thinks I have a-fib, again.

Here is one of the EKG readings. In row 2, it’s obvious that beats two and seven are a but early. I don’t know when this started but I did have a huge blowup with my parents during dinner. Maybe the a-fib us temporary due to the extra stress.

==========

I just took a few more readings and they came back normal. Hmm… maybe the previous a-fib readings were caused by emotional distress. That sucks.

Freshly Meal #1

I received my first delivery today. It came in a big heavy box even though I ordered only six meals. Inside the box was a lot of foam packing and two huge ice packs that were still mostly frozen. Seems kind of wasteful but not sure how else they are going to delivery perishable food.

Since it was my first order, I went small and ordered six meals. I also found a coupon so I think it was $45(?) for all six meals. The first one I tried was the Swede-ish Meatballs with peas/carrots and cauliflower-potato mash. This is the PR photo on the website:

This is what it looks like in real life after three minutes in the microwave oven:

I ate about 75% of the meal, both meatball (3/4) and vegetable-wise. Overall taste was probably a 6 out of 10. I used to get Marie Calendar frozen meals from supermarkets a lot and the taste is not that different except Freshly is much more expensive. I still have five more meals to try but will probably skip the coming week until I decide if I like the taste and the cost. I didn’t specify any nutritional restrictions so it’s not really heart/kidney healthy:

Since I only ate 3/4 of the meal and it was my only meal of the day, it wasn’t too bad overall. The worst items are probably the saturated fat and potassium. The ingredients did not show any food preservatives so not sure where all the extra potassium came from. The cream sauce appears to be made of Greek yogurt so the taste is a bit strange for me. Hopefully some of the other meals are healthier.

At least I didn’t throw up… yet.

Post Ablation Update

So (knock on wood) my heart rate is still pretty stable at 60 bpm after 36 hours. However, I haven’t been able to eat anything substantial. Yesterday, I coughed a bit too hard and threw up before eating anything for dinner. It was pretty violent and the regurgitated stomach acid burned my throat more. This morning, I thought I would make a ham/egg breakfast sandwich but that didn’t work out. The ham from Costco was very salty even though it tasted fine a few days ago. I ended up just putting a scrambled/fried egg in the sandwich but that made me vomit too. I think this time it was more of the bread scratching my sore throat. I’ve been afraid of eating anything all day. All I’ve had to eat for the past two days was one quarter of a terrible turkey sandwich, a small bowl of chicken noodle soup (that was basically all celery), and one bottle of Ensure. Only problem is that due to my dry/sore throat, I’ve been sipping water and swallowing ice chips both days so now I think I’m close to 3.0 kg over dialysis dry weight. I feel like I can’t even eat anything even if I can keep it down.

I feel like all the blog posts are complaints nowadays but life is really really not enjoyable at all.

Pei Wei Lunch

I used to eat at Pei Wei’s quite a bit because my boss really like their food, and there were locations close to work. I think a lot of Pei Wei locations closed in California and there are only three left in the state. Fortunately, there is one relatively close by in The District in Tustin. For lunch, I got their Mongolian Beef with white rice. I should have asked for light sauce because it’s super salty. Here is the nutritional information:

Hmm, salty. Total is about 2,500 mg of sodium. I only ate about half the food so I guess I can finish it for dinner. Since this is the only thing I’m eating today (probably), it’s not too bad compared to a DV of 2,000 mg. I wish they would also show the potassium and phosphorus content as well since those are the other two items I’m most worried about after sodium.

I ended up eating some noodles mom made for dinner and promptly threw up. Sigh…

Hungry

Thus nausea sucks. I’ve thrown up a few days in a row now. I basically just eat breakfast plus a tiny snack for lunch. During dinner time, I can’t hold down much food and would end up drinking a Nepro protein shake.

I just went downstairs to eat a small bowl of cereal at 2:30 am since my stomach was hurting from hunger. I think I have to order out more since I can tolerate a few restaurants’ food more than my mom’s home cooking.

Jersey Mike’s Club Sub

I’ve walked by our local Jersey Mike’s restaurant many times since it’s right next to a local Vietnamese pho place. My dad usually goes to a Subway that’s really nearby but the sandwiches are not that great, and Subway subs have a very particular smell that’s not too appetizing. A few days ago, I ordered a club sub online from Jersey Mike’s. Here is the nutritional information from their website.

First, having numbers to two decimal places seems ridiculous. Can they really measure 0.01 mg of anything? Second, wow that a lot of sodium. The website actually lists nutritional information for each ingredient in the sandwich. There is about 500 mg of sodium in each of the ham and turkey used in the sandwich. For total fat, there was a lot in both the mayo and the olive oil blend. The sandwich tasted great though.

I did make a mistake in the order. Jersey Mike’s specialty appears to be Italian subs which explains the olive oil blend and oregano. If I order a club sub/sandwich next time, I think I will skip those ingredients. They taste kinda weird on a club sandwich. I’ll probably go with a mini sandwich too. There’s still too much sodium (1,574 mg) but it’s better than the regular sandwich.

I added a few more sandwiches that looks great and rounded the nutritional information. The sodium levels are crazy high on all choices so I don’t know if I can eat there that much (or at all). Sigh…

Freshly and Urban Plates

I had trouble keeping down some chicken katsu curry my mom made using an air fryer. It’s the same issue: I would chew a few bites and suddenly want to throw up. There are only a few things I can eat from her cooking, otherwise I have to order out from local restaurants.

After looking up a few choices, I signed up and ordered six meals from Freshly. Instead of shipping you ingredients and having you cook your own means like Blue Apron, Freshly entrees are fully cooked and just need to be microwaved. That increases the chance that the meal will suck but I don’t feel like spending an hour cooking one serving.

Here’s my first order. It was $60 for six meals with shipping but I found a $15 off coupon (good for first four weekly orders) so it’s only $45. It’s a bit more expensive than the food kit companies but the food comes already cooked. Hopefully the food is edible. My other choices include order dinner each night from Urban Plates nearby for ~$14 including tax but that will probably get old soon.

I didn’t finish the Brussels Sprouts not the bread so take a bit off the total nutritional values. It was okay overall. My sister had her air conditioner on full blast and it cooled and hardened the chicken pretty fast. I ended up eating only half the chicken too and fed the rest to their two dogs. I guess it was pretty nutritious since I only ate about half the food.

Hyperkalemia?

One of the causes of tachycardia and arrhythmia is high blood potassium or hyperkalemia. I thought this may be causing my increased heart rate. However, my potassium levels from monthly labs have been pretty normal.

Test DatePotassiumNotes
5/14/20204.9 mmol/Ldialysis
5/11/20205.7 mmol/LSt. Joseph Hospital
4/16/20204.9 mmol/Ldialysis
3/12/20205.0 mmol/Ldialysis
2/13/20205.0 mmol/Ldialysis
1/25/20205.9 mmol/LQuest (pre-surgery)
1/16/20204.8 mmol/Ldialysis

Interestingly, the two times my potassium levels tested high were not from the monthly labs from dialysis. From the WebMD site linked above,

Normal blood levels of potassium are critical for maintaining normal heart electrical rhythm. Both low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia) and high blood potassium levels (hyperkalemia) can lead to abnormal heart rhythms.

The most important clinical effect of hyperkalemia is related to electrical rhythm of the heart. While mild hyperkalemia probably has a limited effect on the heart, moderate hyperkalemia can produce EKG changes (EKG is a reading of the electrical activity of the heart muscles), and severe hyperkalemia can cause suppression of electrical activity of the heart and can cause the heart to stop beating.

The last time my heart rate went crazy, I thought I drank a lot of suanmeitang, which is a Chinese sour plum drink. There’s no nutrition label on the source but it seems sour plums have very high potassium levels. If the potassium results from the dialysis labs are inaccurate, i.e., too low, then the extra potassium may push me into hyperkalemia.

Right after walking on the treadmill yesterday, I ate a bowl of French Vanilla ice cream. The nutrition label said for a serving size of 2/3 cup, there was 173 mg of potassium, or ~4% of DV. I probably had a bit more than one serving but is ~250 mg of potassium enough to trigger arrhythmia? I guess if my potassium levels are already too high.

If my arrhythmia is triggered by a spike in blood potassium levels, will it drop when the extra potassium is metabolized? Or is my heart stuck on the high pulse rate?

Souplantation Is No More

Ugh. I just saw the news that Souplantation restaurants are not opening post-COVID-19. I guess in the post-virus era, the buffet business model will be hard to sustain. Since all the food is just sitting out there, it’s hard to prevent contamination.

There is a Souplantation about 15 minutes from my house that we go to a lot. Mainly I would get their Asian salad and chicken noodle soup. I get coupons emailed to me regularly so it’s a cheap meal and we usually end up eating too much. Now I’m worried about all the other buffet-style restaurants. Also, what about Las Vegas? Each casino has a huge buffet restaurant, some of them pretty expensive.

Lunch: Wok Hei

Wok Hei is a primarily takeout/delivery “Chinese” food restaurant. When I say Chinese, I mean American Chinese food. Whenever you see stuff like Moo Goo Gai Pan (蘑菇雞片) listed on the menu, you know it’s not authentic Chinese food. Sometimes that’s okay. My boss and I used to go to Pei Wei all the time for lunch. Pei Wei is owned by P.F. Chang’s, where P.F. stands for Paul Fleming. Anyway, I’ve order from there a few times before. I was going to get a 2-dish family meal but I remember my dad not liking their food so I ended up getting one dish, plus used some points to get some fried egg rolls.

Wok Tossed NY

I ended up getting something called Wok Tossed NY ($10.95) which has beef, mushrooms, carrots, scallions, and lots of garlic in a sweet sauce. When they say “sweet”, they really mean it. There was a lot of tender beef slices but it was way too sweet. It came with a small container of white rice, which I finished quickly since I needed something bland to mix with the overpowering sweetness of the sauce. I only ate about half of the dish; I guess I can cook some rice and finish it for dinner. It’s not bad but not really good. I’d probably give it 3/5 stars if I had to grade it. It was the same for the other two times I ordered from there: okay but not really memorable.

Fried Egg Rolls

Incidentally, they used to have two locations: Villa Park and Tustin. I used to go to the Villa Park location since it was closer. That location shut down several months ago so I had to go to the other location for pick up after dialysis. I think we’re just outside their delivery area.

Looks like they have a fleet of Fiat 500’s for delivery

Tokyo Fast Food

Since I had an appointment at UCLA Medical Plaza today, I originally planned on getting lunch at Versailles. It’s a Cuban restaurant that has an awesome garlic chicken dish (menu item #6). When I was at UCLA, we used to come here all the time and everyone would order the same dish. Back then, the half-chicken was $6; now, it’s $16 for the same dish. However, I got out from the UCLA appointment pretty quickly. I only saw the cardiologist for 5 minutes. He asked me a few questions and then said he will write a note recommending that I be taken off the transplant hold list.

Anyway, while I was driving back to the freeway and debating my lunch plans, I decided to drive down Santa Monica Blvd. towards the ocean. I used to go to a Japanese fast food place but haven’t been there in over 23 years. I only vaguely remember where it was but I managed to find the corner plaza and surprisingly, the restaurant is still here. Everything inside looked the same as well. I got my favorite, #1 combo with teriyaki chicken and beef. The price is a bit higher at $8.95 but not by much. The food tastes exactly the same too.

Yummy but a bit salty

I brought the food to work since I needed to stop by and pick up a package. Out of 50 people in our department, there’s only three people here, including me.

==========

When I was at UCLA and getting food there regularly, the lady at counter thought I was Japanese. She would greet me and say a whole bunch of stuff in Japanese and I understood none of it. I just nodded and said “numba 1 to go” and paid. I doubt it’s the same lady today since she looks young and we spoke in English.

In-N-Out Lunch

My dad texted me to pick up some In-N-Out burgers for lunch. The drive-through line was crazy long, probably 30 cars. It did move pretty quick though. I ordered and was out in about 15 minutes. Like Raising Canes, they had several workers in masks take orders in line. Since I didn’t really eat dinner for two days, I got a double-double with grilled onions, well-done fries, and a chocolate shake. For some reason, the fries were super salty so I only ate a couple of fries. I found nutrition information on In-N-Out’s website:

I thought the burger was a bit salty but not 1,440 mg salty. Add some fries and the shake, I’m probably at the 2,000 mg daily limit. Likewise for fat. The recommended daily value for saturated fat is only 20 g so either the burger or the shake will put you at the limit. Definitely can’t eat this every day.

Take-Out Lunch: Raising Cane’s

Last Tuesday after dialysis, I decided to get lunch at Raising Cane’s in Tustin. I used to go there about once a month to get lunch on Sunday but haven’t been there since the heart surgery. At first glance, I should be staying away from fried chicken tenders and french fries, but I had a craving all day Tuesday so I stopped by and got a Box Combo. Instead of ordering at the drive-through board, they had two employees standing at the side of the drive-through lane to take orders. I paid by credit card, making sure I wiped it down with hand sanitizer after getting it back from the cashier. I gave my parents the Coleslaw and Texas Toast but ate most of the rest. It was yummy. In hindsight, it wasn’t the healthiest lunch. There is a lot of fat and sodium. Even if you remove the Coleslaw and Texas Toast, it still ~1,600 mg of sodium. I guess if I didn’t eat too much for breakfast and dinner, it’s probably okay. If you look at the individual chicken finger, it’s only 180 mg of sodium each, or 720 mg for all four. A lot of sodium is actually in Cane’s Sauce which appears to be a spicy ranch dressing. Maybe I’ll just get the 3 Finger Combo next time.

Take-Out Lunch: Fortune Cookie

My parents ordered lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Orange called Fortune Cookie. I think we’ve eaten there several times before the pandemic and the food was okay. The decor was definitely nicer that your typical Chinese restaurant will nice upholstered booths. They ordered three dishes: spicy/cashew chicken, braised string beans, and chicken lettuce wrap. It was probably the worst tasting restaurant Chinese I’ve had in a long time. The string beans were not seasoned and the stir-fried chicken dish had stinky bamboo shoots. Afterwards, my dad called to ask them what’s up and they said their main chef skipped work due to the coronavirus. I guess they had their line cooks make the food and it shows. The restaurant said they will cook another dish for us for free. Not sure if my dad took them up on it since it will probably taste just as bad.

Throwing Up Dinner

My mom made hot and sour soup and potstickers for dinner last night. The soup was ok; it wasn’t to hot nor too sour. However, the potstickers were filled with pork and I think I still have problems with strong pork flavored food. The first bit was all dough but on the second bite I got some pork. It was just a bit of meat filling but it was enough to send me to the bathroom and vomit out a ton of stomach acid. I haven’t had anything to eat for 8 hours so it was all acid and no food. Yum!

Potstickers or pan-fried frozen dumplings

Between not eating and not sleeping, I’m feeling pretty miserable. Usually I would go out and get some restaurant food but half the restaurants are closed now. I’ve been stuck at home for two week, leaving only for dialysis and short walks. With the mild shortness of breath, I can’t even walk that much so it’s just home and dialysis. Since I’m not sleeping at night, I need to make that up with short naps during the day. Right now it’s 6:45 am and I haven’t slept all night. I would use another vacation day but I have a few calls I need to be on for work so it’s going to be another shitty day.

DoorDash and CPK

Tired of eating the same food day after day, we decided to get some take-out for dinner yesterday. I called a local Italian restaurant but no one answered the phone. I then went online to DoorEash and ordered two pizzas from CPK (California Pizza Kitchen). I went there for lunch pretty often a very long time ago, but haven’t eaten there in years.

The website said delivery in about 55 minutes and since we’re in the middle of a pandemic, I okayed the suggested $7 tip. So the total was about $33 for pizza + tax + $3.50 for DoorDash + $7 tip = ~$46. I forgot how small the CPK pizza were somit wasn’t really worth it.

Thai Chicken Pizza

Also the driver was about 20 minutes late somthe pizzas were just slightly warm. Worst part, I put on the order to have the driver drop, off the food at the front door. However, maybe driver rangthe doorbell and waited for my dad to open the door, and handed the bag to him. That defeats the purpose of the delivery. I would have gone and picked itbupmif we needed to come in contact with strangers. Sigh.

Take Out Lunch

Near the end of my dialysis session yesterday, I got a marketing email from Panini Kabab Grill. I used to order food from them quite often so they have my contact info from the app I downloaded. I would usually get the two kabab family dinner for the three of us at home. It’s very convenient since there is one in Santa Ana Main Place, which is only five minutes from my dialysis clinic. Like almost all restaurants in California now, they only do take-out and delivery as their dining room is closed due to COVID-19.

Basically the email was advertising them rolling back prices on two menu items: Charbroiled Chicken Shish Kabab and 4-Skewer Family Kabab Combo. I’ve been eating poorly again these past two weeks as we are stuck at home. My taste profile has changed since heart surgery so some of the items I used to like from my mom’s cooking now taste bad and some things even cause nausea and vomiting.

Panini kababs also taste slightly different from what I remembered but it’s still tasty so I bought two kabob plates for $10 each. I managed to eat one entire plate for lunch and it was good not to be hungry again. There’s no nutritional information on their website but MyFitnessPal has some basic info:

  • Calories = 423 calories
  • Carbohydrates = 2 g
  • Fat = 2 g
  • Protein = 63 g

I’m actually worried about the sodium levels since you can’t really tell from the taste how salty food is.

Ramen Lunch Nutrition

I had lunch with a friend today. He came by work to pick me up and we went to Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen in Gardena. I’m always worried about eating here because the ramen broth is probably very salty so I try not to drink any of it outside of slurping the noodles. Their website does not provide any nutritional information but I found some on MyFitnessPal:

The nutritional information looks wrong. There’s got to be more fat in the bowl of ramen. You get two pieces of chashu pork, which has a ton of fat, plus all the grease in the ramen broth. I also think there’s more than 1,000 mg of sodium. I also had a small beef bowl (gyudon) for lunch so add more fat, sodium, and carbs to the info above.

Good thing I skipped the breakfast burrito at work this morning.

Breakfast Burritos at Work

I love breakfast burritos with bacon, though I haven’t had any since my heart surgery. At work, the cafeteria usually has a breakfast burrito available every morning but the ingredients vary by week. This week, the description says Bacon Jalapeno Breakfast Burrito: Eggs, Potatoes and Bacon-Jalapeno Cheese Sauce wrapped in a Flour Tortilla served with a Side. I thought about getting it but then I looked at the nutritional information:

Ugh, that’s a lot of saturated fat and sodium. I would have to cut back a lot on the rest of my meals today if I ate the burrito for breakfast. Also, if there’s nothing good on the menu for lunch, I usually wait until 2:00 pm and get an Italian Sandwich. I thought I was being healthy but looking at the nutritional information, it’s worse than the burrito. The ingredients contain: Salami, Ham, Capicola, Provolone, Shredded Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Oregano, Vinegar, EVOO, and Sweet Peppers on a Hoagie Roll. I think all the different meats have lots of fat and sodium. We also get a small bag of potato chips with the sandwich but I’ve been giving that away.

Yummy but super salty

The other post lunch food choice is Two All Beef Hot Dogs on Potato Buns. I used to get this too but stopped due to all the phosphates in hot dog wieners. I also put a lot of ketchup and onions on the hot dogs, which probably adds even more sodium. It appears to be the worst choice for lunch nutritionally. Why does everything that tastes good so bad for you?

I guess it’s hard to estimate the nutritional information by taste alone.
