Traditional Chinese Medicine

Since I am Chinese, I have grown up around Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). However, as I lived mostly in Canada and the United States, I have not been treated with TCM. I probably did have some herbal supplements before, and there was my experiment with acupuncture in treating my peripheral neuropathy.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a broad range of medicine practices sharing common concepts which have been developed in China and are based on a tradition of more than 2,000 years, including various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy.

Wikipedia

I am sure that through years of anecdotal evidence, there may be some basis for herbal supplements and even acupuncture. However, for major illnesses, I am highly skeptical about using TCM to diagnose and treat the illness. Even worse are the contorted explanations given to try and explain the efficacy of TCM treatment. From my limited experience, much of it is totally illogical, and runs counter to Western medicine or even basic science.

I bring this up because my aunt called my mom about my uncle (dad’s brother). He had a stroke several years ago. I do not remember the exact date, but likely early 2015 based on some data from Google Timeline. Since two out of three of their children were in Asia, I went to the hospital almost daily after work for a few weeks after his stroke. My parents were visiting relatives in Canada at that time; when they returned to LA, they took over the visitations. The stroke was pretty serious from the CT scans I saw. It turned out my uncle had several smaller strokes before, but he never noticed, nor did he go see doctors regularly. I think he was about 70 years old at the time.

The first few weeks at the hospital was pretty bad. He was incoherent, very agitated, and hostile to hospital staff. He did improve after a few weeks, and the hospital sent him to a residential recovery center. My aunt brought him home soon after that and has been taking care of him since then. He showed more improvements but lost a lot of cognitive functions. Meanwhile, my two cousins stayed in Asia, and the last/youngest cousin got married, so my aunt basically took care of him alone. The reason she called today was that my uncle deteriorated a lot recently. He can no longer speak and has lost bowel control. She was looking for information on homes for dementia patients, since my parents had to take care of my grandmother many years ago.

It did not have to happen this way. From secondhand information, mostly from my mom, my aunt relied on TCM to treat his stroke for the past five years. That means no CT scans, no anti-dementia medication, no Western doctor visits. What she had been doing was bringing him to a TCM “doctor” who gave him herbal medicine, and treatment that literally translates to “hitting the head.” (打頭)I cannot find anything on this online, but my aunt pays $40/session, and she gets the treatment done too. I am pretty sure it is not an effective treatment for stroke, or anything at all. Recently, after my uncle’s condition worsened, the TCM practitioner said his brain “shrunk” causing the new symptoms. How did they know? Did they do a brain scan? Nope. It seems like they put a finger on his “energy paths” to feel the diagnosis. Is this like chakra or something? Sounds suspiciously like nonsense to me.

I am not sure what happens now. My uncle used to be the president of a multi-national corporation with hundreds of employees. The cousin not in Asia has a PhD in some kind of medical field (I think occupational therapy). Her spouse is a nurse. The other two cousins went to well-known US universities. I seriously do not understand how things have gone so wrong without anyone suggesting a visit to a neurologist. My grandmother on my dad’s side had Alzheimer’s Disease, and I heard it is typically passed down from mom to sons. My other uncle (dad’s other brother) is also showing signs of dementia per another cousin. I think in addition to the stroke, the first uncle was showing symptoms of dementia too. That should have been a huge red flag to his family to seek professional medical help. It is probably too late now.

I am kind of sad. Although we were not super close (their entire family moved to Taiwan for many years before returning to LA), my uncle did give me my first office job. When I moved here to the US, I worked at a supermarket during the summer before starting my senior year in high school. After a few weeks, he gave me a job at his company, and I worked several years there (full-time summer and Sundays during school year). It was a much nicer work environment, even though I had to help out in the warehouse and drive a forklift occasionally.

I think my mom was able to convince my aunt to at least get a CT scan and get a diagnosis from a real doctor. Maybe there is room for improvement if he receives proper treatment now, but I am not hopeful. 😢

Air Filter vs. Humidifier

A week ago, I purchased a Blue Pure 411 Auto air filter. It has an automatic setting where the unit measure the “dirtiness” of the air, and adjusts the fan setting accordingly. I usually leave it on auto, and the fan setting has been on low this entire time.

I also have a humidifier that I used quite often, but have not used it recently. Yesterday, I filled the reservoir with water and turned on the humidifier. It was place about five feet from the air filter. I believe the air filter detected the water vapor, thought it was a pollutant, and kicked the air filter fan to high. At first I did not notice anything, but became aware of the loud fan noise. The air filter is very quite on low, but definitely not quiet with the fan on high setting.

Look like I cannot use both units at the same time…

City of Orange Shooting

The site of the shooting is about 8 miles from my house. I do not usually drive through that area but the Raising Cane’s in Tustin is a few blocks away. At first, I was worried that it was a random shooting, but it looks more and more like the shooter knew the victims personally and through their business. Still pretty bad, but different from a purely random or gang related shootings.

NAS Restore

I previously posted about my problems trying to expand my NAS from 6TB to 12TB. Well, I finally have every thing up and running again. In addition, I am trying out a new backup process. Since I have all my movies and TV shows backed up on portable external hard drives, I did not include those folders in the NAS backup. Instead, selected everything but those two folders and documents from my parents’ PC, and backed them up to the 3TB external drive connected to the back of the NAS. I also created a backup of all the backups from each PC in the house, in case we lose a computer and the NAS at the same time. Finally, I created a partition for Time Machine to back up my Macbook Air. Whew! It is a bit confusing, but I think I have two or three copies of every computer file, including video and music files.

Two remaining issues though. One, I cannot seem to get Time Machine to backup to the NAS. I am logged in to the NAS from my Mac using administrator credentials, yet it keeps giving me a backup failure error. The other Time Machine backup to a portable 1TB external hard drive works fine. Two, somehow I lost track of a folder containing all the 3D movies I downloaded. There was probably 25 to 30 movies, and each file was between 2GB and 3GB. I must have erased it when I was backing up then resetting/erasing the NAS. I cannot even remember the folder path, but I clicked through all the files folders on my PC and NAS, and cannot find the 3D movie files. It took a long time to download each movie file. I guess I will have to do it all over again if I want to watch movies in 3D on my VR goggles.

Home NAS Fail

Photo by panumas nikhomkhai on Pexels.com

I purchased a Network Attached Storage (NAS) server several years ago to store and share my media collection. It was a Synology DJ218+, which has two drive bays, and a 6TB Western Digital Red Pro drive. The combo has been working great, except I was running out of space on the drive. Since the NAS still had an empty drive bay, I purchased another 6TB drive (Western Digital Red Plus), and inserted it thinking I would get 12TB of storage.

Nope.

The default setup of the NAS storage volumes is Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR), which is basically a RAID 1 configuration. RAID 1 makes a duplicate of the stored data so two 6TB drives only yields 6TB of total storage, not 12TB. Of course, I did not know this so I had to wait for the NAS to finish duplicating the 5.5TB of data so I can reset the entire system and start over. Resetting also means wiping all the data on the NAS. Luckily I had enough excess storage spread across multiple devices to back everything up. It took me two days to figure out how to set the NAS up for RAID 0, which is combining both drives into one storage volume. Now I am restoring all the data back on to the NAS. First volume contains all the movies and TV shows, which totals 3.57TB. I am doing this on my PC and the dialog box said it will take 10 hours and 30 minutes.

Ugh.

After that is done, I still have to restore other videos, music, photos, and other non-media data. This may take an entire week. I also need to figure out how to back up all this data. I was using a 4TB drive for movies and TV shows, and another 3TB drive for the rest. I guess that is still sufficient for now but eventually I will need more storage. It is like a slowly spreading disease.

==========

So about three hours have passed and the Windows dialog box says… 11 hours to go. WTF?! It looks like the transfer rate is ~100MB/sec so 3.57TB should take 3.57 x 1024 x 1024 / 100 / 60 / 60 = 10.4 hours. Hey, the 10 hour 30 minute initial estimate was pretty good. Don’t know what happened during the last three hours though.

==========

30 minutes later and the estimate dropped to 7 hours. These estimates are not very consistent. It says there is 2.39TB to go, which works out to about… 7 hours.

==========

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh! I hit [Esc] by accident and the copy process stopped. I just dragged over the two folders again. Hopefully it will lat me skip identical files. Otherwise I just wasted 3.5 hours. 😭

16 hours?!

The transfer speed just picked up again to ~100MB/sec so it “should” copy all the remaining files in about 7 hours then ask me what to do with duplicates. Actually, I was trying to take a screenshot of the above when I hit [Esc].

If you are wondering about the current filename, it is a Korean movie. It is probably similar to something like Revenge of the Nerds. The entire movie with English subtitles can be found on YouTube but it will not let me embed it here.

==========

It is 3:00 am in the morning and the file copy dialog box says 1.9TB remaining and about 7 hours left. The movies folder is completely copied over, and I can see TV show filenames being copied. It will likely end before the 7 hours and ask me if I want to skip or replace the duplicate files from the first copy attempt.

I am not sure which component is the speed bottleneck. The NAS is connected via Ethernet through a gigabit switch, along with the Windows 10 PC that is doing the copying. The source files are on a 4TB external hard drive connected to the PC via USB 3.0 (5 Gbit/sec). I guess if one byte = 8 bits, then 100MB/sec is 800Mbit/sec, pretty close to the gigabit Ethernet speed limit. Also, the maximum transfer rate on the NAS is 112MB/sec so maybe 100MB/sec is normal.

My “data center”

The Synology DJ218+ NAS server is the white box in the middle. To the right is a 1TB external hard drive connected via USB 2.0 that is backing up all the documents on three Windows 10 PCs. To the right of that is a 3TB external hard drive backing up the NAS, except for movies/TV show files. Those are backed up to the 4TB external hard drive mentioned above. The 4TB drive also had built-in Wifi so I can take it with me on trips and stream video to iPhone/iPad using VLC. On the left is a 550VA APC uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The NAS, two external hard drives, Ethernet switch, cable modem, Wifi router, and a LED desk lamp are all connected to the UPS. With 12TB (or 10.8TB useable) of disk space, I probably will need to replace the 1TB external hard drive with something larger, maybe 8TB or more.

==========

I’m going back to sleep. Hopefully the copying will be done when I wake up in a few hours.

Natera Prospera

I received a mysterious FedEx package this morning. Usually packages sent via FedEx priority overnight are pretty important since it costs a bit of money to send. Since it was addressed to me and UCLA, I called the Transplant Center to find out more information. I ended up leaving a voicemail and also sending a message to them as well. The box inside the package was from a company called Natera and it also had the word Prospera on it.

Someone from UCLA did call me back after a few hours and said it was to collect blood samples for a DNA study. I remember enrolling in the program and agreeing to have a phlebotomist come to my house and draw blood. However, I did not receive any calls prior to receiving the package, which caused the confusion. Indeed, I just received a call from Natera to schedule the phlebotomist appointment. I mentioned I was going to UCLA’s Laguna Hills lab to draw blood next week, so I will just bring the kit with me and only get poked once.

The program is a tool for early detection of transplanted organ rejection. They test the blood for my sister’s DNA since it is in her donated kidney. However, the percentage should be very small. If they detect the amount of donor DNA increasing, it could mean the organ is being rejected by my immune system and spilling cell parts into the bloodstream. I had to sign a bunch of consent forms so I don’t know if I am a patient or a test subject. Either way, it seemed pretty clever.

Kidney Transplant and Pets

During the screening process, I was asked several times whether I had pets in the house. Other than dog-sitting my sister’s two dogs, I do not have any pets. I used to have a few hamsters but that was a long time ago. I also took care of my ex-wife’s cat a few months post-divorce. That was miserable since I am allergic to cats and had to take Benadryl every day.

I finally looked up this topic online and found this from the CDC. Some websites also suggest transplant patients get rid of their pets since the risk of infection is much higher with pets in the house. Again, the only pets I come into contact with are my sister’s dogs and they’re pretty healthy and clean.

Here are my sister’s two dogs:

Dreams & Time Perception

It has been almost 15 years since my divorce. However, it really does not feel like it has been that long. I am guessing that it is because my ex-wife keeps showing up in my dreams. When I wake up from a dream episode, it takes a few moments to distinguish between the dream and reality. That is probably why the divorce seems so recent, when I have not had contact with her for over 12 or 13 years. I tried to talk to a therapist about this but we did not get anywhere before the therapist went on maternity leave.

My ex-wife got remarried quite a few years ago. She probably does not think of me at all.

==========

Another recurring dream is taking a final exam but not having attended any classes for the entire semester/quarter. I have this dream almost monthly, and it is always a social science class like history. Maybe that is why school does not seem that long ago either, even though it has been over 25 years since my last college degree.

Suicide

I have been on a Running Man binge lately, downloading and watching episodes. Last night, I came across episode 388, which had Goo Hara as a guest. Unfortunately, she committed suicide in November 2019. I remember this very clearly since it was the first weekend after my discharge from heart bypass surgery. I was a big KARA fan and had seen them in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010.

Anyway, clicking on links in YouTube, I found an upload of a Instagram live that Hara recorded right before she committed suicide. Sadly, it was a video message to Sulli, another K-Pop idol from the group f(x) that had also committed suicide six weeks earlier. Reading through online articles, it seemed both were victims of online bullying, with Hara also physically abused by her ex-boyfriend. He also threatened Hara with releasing sex videos taken without her consent.

I am not sure why I posted this. It was very sad to watch the Running Man episode. In hindsight, the introduction interview with Hara was super cringey when they talked about her prior comment about marriage. Even though I listen to a lot of K-Pop, it is a brutal industry, especially for girl groups. Also in Korea, similar to other East Asian countries, mental health is not really considered, and those that seek counseling or therapy are considered mentally weak. Very sad.

==========

Post heart surgery, I had to switch back to hemodialysis. The first few weeks were very tough since I could not really walk, and had to use a wheelchair to go from the parking lot to the clinic. I also felt terrible, with chest pains and anxiety. I even got sent to the ER during dialysis due to a likely panic attack. However, I had a lot of support, even if most of it was online from text messages and email. I did not have strangers cyberbullying me or experience physical abuse. Even then, I had moments where I though about giving up, and just stop going to dialysis. Now that I am in a much better place, I can see how depression can mess with your perception of reality, and how hard it is to overcome it on your own. I do not understand why people are so toxic online. Is it the anonymity? Are those people like that in real life, face-to-face interactions?

K-R&B

Since signing up for Spotify Premium, I have been checking out recommended artists for each song I add to my K-Pop playlist. I recently “found” this artist named Jiselle. She only has three or four singles out, but I really like this song. I think Spotify is grouping her into the Korean R&B sub-genre and there are a lot of cool stuff there.

She is under the label Million Market, which I believe is part of SM Entertainment. They are probably the largest K-Pop management company, and was not affected by the Spotify-Kakao M spat recently.

==========

Ooh, new song released yesterday:

Weird. 1theK is part of Kakao M. You would think SM can distribute the song on their own network.

Walking Outside 3/8/2021

The weather looked really nice this afternoon so I went for a walk. However, it turned out much colder than it appeared. My Apple Watch said 61°F but I am not sure which weather station it is referring to. I ended up walking 1.67 miles at a pace of 19’42”. It is the first time in a long time that I came in under 20 minutes. My knee is definitely getting better. There is still a slight limp and a bit of pain, but it did not bother me at all. Hopefully, it will be all healed in another week.

I am really getting bored now. I did not do anything today except eat, nap, and watch TV/YouTube. In other news, I got an email from the Korean American Center in Irvine that their Spring 2021 Korean Language Courses are open for registration. It is 11 weeks and costs $199. I am still debating whether or not to take it. I should probably take Chinese lessons since I am basically illiterate but all the courses are in Simplified Chinese and I want to learn the Traditional characters. Anyway, one lesson probably will not help with song lyrics or TV dialogue; it will take a lot of lessons for that level of understanding.

The Death of Hong Kong

This is another off-topic post; it has nothing to do with dialysis, kidney transplant, or any other health issues.

Before I was diagnosed with ESRD, I used to travel to Asia often. For several years, I was the volunteer CFO for my friend’s company. It was a US company but their main manufacturing site was in Chengdu, China. I would take a week of vacation from my “real” job once a quarter, and travel to Chengdu to do some finance stuff. Since I wanted to avoid both US and China based airlines, I would typically fly with Cathay Pacific, and their main hub was Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

All together, I probably transited through HKIA close to 30 times, and actually cleared immigration to enter Hong Kong about a half-dozen times. I really enjoyed the food and culture of Hong Kong. Particularly awesome was the dim sum, since it was invented in Hong Kong. I remember having dim sum at the airport and it was very good. While I was stuck on dialysis, I really looked forward to visiting again. However, with China’s recent takeover, that is looking less and less likely. I used to post in another blog that was very critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Most likely no one in China has seen my blog, but with the newly passed National Security Law (NSL), there is a non-zero chance I could be detained in Hong Kong and held indefinitely in a Chinese jail. With China’s aggressive cleansing of anything democratic in Hong Kong, it will soon be just like another shitty city in China, and not worth visiting.

In memory of my past visits, here are some photos that I took on my many trips to Hong Kong:

Most of my stops in Hong Kong was transiting to other destinations while flying on Cathy Pacific. With the recent CCP campaign against foreigners in China, and Hong Kong basically turned into a police state, I am staying away from both. There are lots of other countries to visit like Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. In fact, I think my next Asia trip will be South Korea + Japan or Taiwan.

New iPhone 12

Even though I have been an Apple person since the early 1980’s, I have always been slow on getting the latest technology. My first Apple product was an Apple ][+ that I purchased used from a family friend, and I used it to write papers while I was a freshman at UCLA. I then bought a Mac Plus but after the Mac SE/30 and Mac II were available. Even now, my Macbook Air is from 2012. For iOS, I had been using a hand-me-down iPhone 6S, and my “newest” tablet is an iPad Air 2.

I have been having a lot of problems with the Bluetooth on my iPhone 6S. It would connect, but the connection is terrible. The audio would skip, then stop altogether. This is consistent across multiple wireless speakers and headphones, and those devices work fine with other phones and tablets. This past Monday, I finally bit the bullet and bought a new iPhone 12. It was blue with 128GB of memory. I looked at the Pro version but could not justify spending a lot more basically for a better camera.

I am still trying to get used to not having a home button. The Face ID seems like a good idea, but with the pandemic and mask wearing, it is actually much slower than using the fingerprint method of previous iPhone models. I find myself punching in the passcode all the time, and unconsciously searching for the home button with my thumb.

I think the next item on the purchase list is a new Macbook. I almost bought one of the new M1 models but decided to wait and see if there will be more models out this year (14″ Macbook Pro), or if there will be a M1X or M2 processor. My old iPad is still good for Zoom calls and the occasional game so that can wait.

Missing K-Pop on Spotify

I literally just signed up for Spotify Premium three weeks ago, and today, about 50% of my playlist disappeared. After Googling a bit, it turns out that Spotify’s license with Kakao M has expired on March 1st, so Spotify had to remove all the songs that Kakao M distributes. I read somewhere that is about 35% of Spotify’s K-Pop songs.

Nothing. There were a lot of songs on the playlist here just this morning.

This totally sucks. I had just got into a lot of independent artists and Korean R&B, and most of those artists’ songs have disappeared. The big 3: SM, JYPE, and YG are still there, along with some other larger companies, but a lot of small and indie artists use Kakao M and it is all gone. I believe it is because Kakao M wants to increase their streaming service, thus eliminating competition with Spotify. Spotify never had a license for South Korea anyway. What this does is remove access and license income for all these artists worldwide without any alternative streaming services. Where is Kakao M’s streaming service in the US? Do they even have one ready for launch? Do they think fans will pay for another streaming service just for 35% of the Korean music market? Delusional. What will happen, for me anyway, is if this is not resolved within a few weeks/months, I will just cancel Spotify Premium and find somewhere to get my K-Pop.

Tablo of Epik High is not happy about this. they just released a new album and it’s not available on Spotify anymore.

Sometimes anti-competitive and monopolistic policies by companies come back and shoot themselves in the foot.

==========

I forgot. Another reason I paid for Spotify Premium is that it is part of the entertainment system in my Tesla. There is a Spotify button but it only works with premium accounts, i.e., not the free accounts. It is convenient to listen to my playlists on the computer or phone, then jump in the car, and have the music continue on the same playlist. However, that all becomes moot when the songs are not even available on Spotify anymore. I also have about 90% of the older K-Pop songs in iTunes as MP3 files so I guess I can go back to copying files to a USB drive and inserting that into my car. Currently, the K-Pop genre on my iTunes Music app has 4,110 items or 10.1 days, and taking up 34.26 GB on the SSD.

Soda Consumption

Before having all these health issues, I used to drink a lot of soda. In college, instead of coffee, I would drink Mountain Dew to stay awake while studying. I never went the Jolt Cola route, but a lot of classmates drank that instead.

Fast forward to my previous job. We had a display refrigerator in each break room with free cans of soda. I drank a lot of regular cola and root beer while working there. I did not like the taste of the artificial sweeteners used in diet soda. When I found out I had type 2 diabetes, I started drinking diet soda, and later Coke Zero. Finally, with ESRD and dialysis, I was told to avoid sugar and dark sodas because of the phosphoric acid.

Now after the kidney transplant, my phosphorus levels are consistently low, even with taking phosphorus supplements. I was taking 250mg of Virt-Phos twice a day. During the last clinic appointment, I told the nurse practitioner that I was eating more cheese and drinking more milk. She mentioned that those foods have a lot of fat and calories, and I should drink more diet soda. I have not had any soda except diet 7-up in about three years, so I went to my local Albertsons and bought three cases of Coke Zero. I also asked my parents to pick up some at Costco, and they came back with a case of 35 cans. Now I am drinking a lot of water, and two cans of Coke Zero each day. Hopefully that will raise my phosphorus levels without affection potassium levels too much.

More recycling

==========

Evidently, it is now called Coke Zero Sugar instead of Coke Zero. Other than the “new” packaging, I did not really notice any differences. Of course, I have not had a Coke Zero for several years so I still remember the old packaging. I also was unable to find all the different flavors. There was only regular Coke Zero (Sugar) and cherry at the local Albertsons. I really want the vanilla flavored ones, and there is an orange flavored one as well. I used to drink the lime flavored Diet Coke too, but I could not find that either.

Apple Music Player

I have a love hate relationship with Apple. Most of the time, their hardware and software is great, but expensive compared to PC alternatives. Other times, they just suck. Most of the issues I have had is related to software updates, either on my Mac or on iOS devices. It is as if Apple does not test their software releases and updates. Each time I have a problem and Google, there are a ton of hits as every user seems to have the same problems. Why were not these widespread issues caught in software quality assurance before release?

Just now, I opened the Music/iTunes application and all my imported music is gone, all 43 GB of MP3’s. The only items showing are songs I purchased from the iTunes store. Since I still have almost no room on the Mac HDD, the files are obviously still on the computer. Why did Music drop the library? No idea, but it appears to be common after a Catalina OS X update. I am reimporting the library XML file that is in the music folder to see if it helps. I also noticed that the app reset the directory path to the Music folder. I definitely did not do that. Why would the software reset the path itself?

Even worse, each time I Google a problem, there is almost never a response from Apple. There are lots of users giving mostly useless advice, including restart, reset, or even a factory reset. That is not a solution if I have to rebuild the entire computer’s software library. In this case, I have a lot of playlists that took a lot of time to organize. It looks like Music is reimporting all the songs again; hopefully I did not lose all my playlists since they also auto-sync to my iPhone and iPad.

==========

Dang it! Music finished importing the last library file and of course, it is not right. There are missing playlists, and the computer said it could not restore some of the files because they are missing. It does not tell me which files are missing either. The worst part, the “recently added” part is all messed up. The list used to show when I imported songs/albums going back years. This is very helpful when I want to check out music that was more recently imported versus stuff that has been on my computer for awhile. Now, everything shows being added “today” and seems to be in random order. I guess it is time to back up all my MP3 files to my NAS and start over. I am now actively looking for an alternative to Apple’s Music app. Hopefully I can find something better that will support iOS devices too.

Cheap Apple Watch Band Update

Remember I bought a cheap metal watch band for my Apple Watch 6? Well, it broke within days. The fit of the band on my Watch was terrible. The metal ends stick out and would either get snagged on clothing. It also did not fit well in the watch band slots. When I tried to take it off again for a closer look, a small metal piece acting as the catch came off, exposing two small springs underneath. However, that means you cannot get the band back into the slot, so the metal band is now basically useless.

I did not deal with this earlier due to the transplant surgery. Evidently, you only get a month for returns. The watch band was from a third party seller but Amazon provided fulfillment services. For some reason, Amazon was unable to provide me with any contact information for the seller, so they were willing to take the defective product as a return. However, they also wanted a 20% restocking fee. This was my only recourse since I could not contact the seller to resolve the problem. Of course I complained on chat and the CSR is giving me credit for the restocking fee. She did let me know that this was a “one time courtesy” even though I spend thousands of dollars every year, and pay for a Prime account. That does not count for shit when it comes to a $3.40 restocking fee on a defective product, which Amazon has no seller contact info, and they are still selling the product. How does that even work?! I left a 1-star review for the product and talked some trash in the comment section regarding Amazon’s stupid policy. We will see if it gets approved and posted.

I commented on the previous post that more and more, the options for shopping is between an expensive product not made in China, and the cheapest crap that are made in China.

City of Orange Business License Tax

Highway robbery!

For several years, I was helping my friend with his company in China. Every quarter, I would take a week of vacation from my day job, travel to China, and help with some finance stuff like planning and fundraising. Anyway, he pays for my airfare, but there are some other travel expenses out-of-pocket, so I file is as business expenses on my taxes. Typically it’s no more than a few thousand dollars a year. This hasn’t been a problem until I moved to the City of Orange. I guess either the IRS or FTB (California Franchise Tax Board) shares my tax data with the city. They came with a demand letter for me to get a business license and pay taxes on my business expenses. Since I have no revenue from my “business”, I end up paying the minimum, which is still $65 or something, and file paperwork. It’s total bullshit. The city does exactly ZERO for me. I don’t have any customers or suppliers. It just expenses from business travel that were not reimbursed.

As I’m cleaning out years of old mail, I found a folder of paperwork related to the business license. I finally got tired of the bureaucratic nonsense and stopped reporting expenses on my taxes. That didn’t matter for the City of Orange. Even though I filled out paperwork to end the business, each year, they would come and demand their license tax. I even found a OMC Violation/Notice of License Due citation. This is several years after I filed multiple times to terminate my “business”. They want me to renew my license (no way) and pay a $50 non-compliance fee. Otherwise they will fine me $1000 and throw me in jail for 6-months, all for $65 for a business tax on a non-existent business. This was back in 2017; I think I ignored it because what else can I do after filing the same paperwork multiple times with no effect.

As I go through old mail, almost every piece of mail from the City of Orange is for more money. I just got something about landscaping going up 14% for the next four years or something. Sewer costs have gone up, as well as a paramedic tax. In fact, I’ve paid the paramedic tax for 10 years. The first time I needed the ambulance, they promptly charged me $1900. It took months to get them to look at their records and acknowledge that I’ve been paying the insurance. I think they just charge you and see who complains. Super corrupt and incompetent.

That is why for every election, in the section for City of Orange, I will chose a random person that is not the incumbent. Sure it probably has no effect on the results, but it’s my protest vote against these corrupt a$$ holes.

Latest Travel Restrictions

I finally get a kidney transplant so I’m not tethered to a dialysis machine. But due to COVID-19 and anti-mask idiots, the pandemic is out of control in the US, and other countries pretty much shut their borders to American travelers.

This is from momondo. There is a lot of red on the map. From the US, I can travel to Mexico, most of South America, most of Africa, and Middle East. The only countries on the list of interest right now is UK and South Korea. I also have a Canadian passport and a Taiwanese passport. It’s not much better. A lot of countries closed their borders to non-citizens. Both Canada and Taiwan are red for American citizens. Maybe I can still travel there if I pull the citizen card.

Probably shouldn’t travel for a few months anyway. I’m still on a lot of anti-rejection medication. One day…

Writing Blog Posts

I’ve always been a terrible writer. Not sure if it’s because I started my career as an engineer or if I’m just not that creative. I think my mind is more analytical which helped me through engineering school, business school, and my current career. However, I often find myself just repeating facts in these blog posts, and not really telling a story.

I have a few friends that also maintain blogs and some of them are wonderful writers. Even my ex-wife, who only moved to the US during high school, is a much better writer than me. Their writing just seems more expressive and interesting; my posts read like an academic paper. I guess knowing is half the battle. I’m going to try and Goggle a bit to see if I can get any pointers on being a better writer.

==========

I remember in college, I had to take a lot of history classes. That year, UCLA decided that electrical engineering majors cannot read or write so we had to take either History 1A/1B/1C or Humanities 1A/1B/1C. That’s three college courses where you read and write a lot. I took the History series. I remember I hated writing papers. I would look through the readings, find interesting quotes to use, then use the rest of the paper/essay to connect the quotes. It worked pretty well; I got mostly A’s in my history classes and I took about 8 of them, almost enough for a History minor. I don’t know if any of the papers made a coherent argument but for me, as long as I met the minimum number of words required, I was done. I didn’t have any non-engineering classes for graduate school, and writing for the MBA program was totally different. There we were only allowed two double-spaced pages and 5 exhibits per case write-up. The challenge was making you case in such a limited amount of space. Maybe that’s why my blog posts are kind of terse.
