Christmas Dinner

Since my sister is out of town (hence the dog sitting), my parents and I had early Christmas dinner tonight. I ordered dinner from Darya Restaurant in Orange. There are a lot of Persian restaurants named Darya and the name seems to mean wealthy. We ordered our typical chicken kabob, though my mom decided to try shrimp this time.

The food was good. My JP Morgan investment guy took me to lunch there a few months ago. It is more expensive than Panini Kabob Grill, however. Our dinner cost about $75; it would have been $50 at Panini.

There was no salad included, though the shrimp entree was supposed to include it. They gave us some thin flatbread/tortilla instead. There was a lot of rice, and I was able to pack a decent lunch for tomorrow.

==========

I ate the leftovers this morning for breakfast and like what happened at work last week, I threw up some of it up after eating. IIRC, there was a lot of coughing both times so maybe that is the trigger. I only threw up about the last three bites, but it still sucked. There were no food issues last night, and I packed the leftovers right away. I ate the rest of the food after resting a bit.

Costco Delivery Order

It is not just Amazon. Costco also delivered my order one day early. The only problem is that it is one of the days I go into the office. In order not to leave the box outside my door for twelve hours, I asked my sister to put the box in my garage. No big deal.

When I opened the box however, I found nuts everywhere inside. I had ordered a bag of trail mix, and the bag was ripped. I also spilled a bunch of nuts and candy all over the laundry/storage room floor. That sucked trying to pick up everything from the floor.

I pulled up the Costco app and asked for a replacement. The system was pretty quick and placed a replacement order for me right away. The shitty part is they want me to return the “defective” item, or they will charge me for the replacement. Luckily, I have thirty days to do so. I ordered online so I can avoid the Christmas madness. The bag of fruits and nuts only cost $16 but I cannot eat the contents if the bag is torn. When this happened with Amazon, they just shipped me a replacement without demanding the damaged bag. Someone should review the returns and make a decision if they want a customer to spend a hour returning something that is obviously unusable and not resellable.

1980’s KROQ

KROQ is a music station in Los Angeles that plays alternative music, whatever that means. Since I moved to LA in 1985 and graduated from UCLA in 1990, I tuned in to KROQ a lot during that time.

I found a playlist on Spotify and there are songs that I have not heard since the 80’s. Here are a few songs in no particular order:

I always thought this was from Journey.

I still have the Substance 1987 CD. Blue Monday is track #4 on disc one.

I believe the last time I heard this song was 1983 in Cancun while on a high school band trip.

Early Amazon Delivery

Now I feel bad for making some poor guy work so early.

Since Christmas is in a week, I bought some gift cards and small stuff on sale. I am also going to the office for a few days this week, so I want to be home when packages arrive. Amazon has a bad habit of delivering packages early (or late) so I asked for this shipment of gift cards as early as possible. Well, I guess early is 4:40 am.

I am certain that I was not the only person on the delivery route.

Christmas Dog Sitting

My sister’s family is visiting in-laws over Christmas, so I have been asked to dog sit again. Since they spoil their two dogs, I need to stay the night over from December 20th to 30th so the dogs will not be lonely at night. I have already told work that I am returning to working only two days in the office due to COVID and other viruses.

I am hoping my work laptop will work with my sister’s computer dock, so I do not have to bring a ton of IT equipment to her house in order to work. We will see if my HP laptop will work with her Lenovo docking station.

2022 Performance Reviews

Manager reviews are due at 11:59 pm tonight. Due to all the org changes in my department, I only have one review to do this cycle. One of my two employees left the company, and all the new hires are too new to require reviews. I only had to complete one review, and that person is my direct report in name only; he does work for several other managers.

I have always hated doing reviews ever since becoming a manager with direct reports. I typically speak to all my staff each day, since my team has always been small, so everyone already knows what I think of their skills and performance. Each time I have to write a review, I feel like I am updating their resume. In addition, my manager always handles raises, bonuses, and promotions by himself. I have not had any compensation input regarding my staff for the 20+ years I have worked for him.

==========

I was also “given” my staff’s rating before I wrote the review, this making this review process an even greater exercise in futility. Anyway, I did get it done and submitted so I am good until next year.

The Wander Club

I saw an ad on Instagram about a keychain with tags for places you have travelled to. I guess you carry that around instead of… hmm, I am not really sure. This is what I saw:

As you can see from the cart symbol, I tried adding all the countries I have been to plus the cheapest holder/strap. The total cart came out to $88, even with discounts. The holder was $25, and each tag, basically small washers, were ~$4 each. My countries are:

  • Taiwan
  • Canada
  • USA
  • Mexico
  • China
  • England
  • France
  • Italy
  • Vatican City
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong
  • Thailand
  • Tunisia
  • Japan

I almost bought everything in my cart. Then I decided to wait a few days to see if I still wanted it. I did not. There is no good reason to get this other than to show off my travel history. Also, fourteen tiny washers on a keychain does not look very impressive. Maybe if I travel to more places in the future I can reconsider.

World Cup 2022 (Argentina Wins)

I have not watched any World Cup games this time. Even though I played on my junior high school team, I was terrible, and I have been a lukewarm fan ever since. In addition, the fact that the World Cup is held in Qatar and with FIFA being super corrupt, it just makes the entire spectacle less interesting. I actually thought the tournament was over, but it appears the final game is tomorrow between Argentina and France.

Out of all the teams that qualified this year, I was kind of following five of them: USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, and Tunisia. USA is pretty obvious since I live here. I also lived in Canada, and though they would do well since they won the qualifying tournament. Instead, Canada got smoked 0-3 in the first round. Embarrassing. At least the USA team made it to the second round, barely. Japan and South Korea also make it to the next round but lost; got to support the Asian teams since there are so few. Finally, Tunisia because I visited there before. It is not a common tourist destination, so I always hope they win some World Cup games.

The final game is at 7:00 am local time tomorrow morning. I probably will not watch unless I am already up. I am not even sure I can receive the game since I do not have cable. If I had to choose sides, I would probably go with Argentina since this appears to be Lionel Messi’s last game before retirement. It feels like a lot of people are cheering for Argentina because of Messi.

I was up early this morning but forgot about the World Cup finals game. I just saw the news that Argentina beat France on penalty kicks. The final score was 3-3 (4-2).

Throwing Up at Work

To celebrate the completion of a large project, we had lunch catered today at work. The food was from a local Mediterranean restaurant with chicken kabobs, rice, salad, and pita bread. The was the second time we catered from this place in the past month, and the food is pretty good.

There were about twenty people in one of the larger conference rooms. I grabbed a plate of food, sat down, took three bites, and felt the immediate urge to throw up. I ran out of the conference room and made it to the bathroom before I threw up all the food I had just eaten. I threw up a lot after my bypass surgery and lost a lot of weight as a result. However, I have been fine for the past two years. The food tasted fine, and I managed to finish it after taking a break. I am still uncertain about what happened.

==========

The food came from a local chain called Chicken Maison. Their restaurants are mainly located in the South Bay, but they have two locations in Orange County. I may try getting take-out from there for our next family dinner.

Rainy Commute

From this past Monday:

The trip took an hour and fifteen minutes, which is typical. The car used more energy than usual, likely due to the wet roads. My Model S has averaged about 275 Wh/mile for the past six years.

My previous car was a Nissan Maxima and I got about 24 miles/gallon. My commute that morning was 41.4 miles. If we assume $5/gallon, this drive to work would have cost ~$8.60. Tier 1 electricity is currently $0.29/kWh from SoCal Edison, which means it cost me $3.67 or a bit less than half the cost of gasoline. Since I have solar panels and mostly charge at work, it likely cost me less. Of course, that does not include depreciation on my Model S. I will never make up the extra cost of the car with operating savings.

Old iOS Apps

In a previous post, I mentioned that I purchased a new iPad Pro since all my older iPads were obsolete and retired by Apple. I am very happy with the new iPad, but there were a few old apps that I could not find. The most disappointing was Air Video HD. I purchased that app in 2014 to stream videos from my main PC. Even though I have bought a network attached storage (NAS) server since then, I still use the old app on all my devices. Unfortunately, the app is no longer available on the Apple app store, so I thought I had to do without.

Today I learned that you could reinstall old apps that you purchased on to new devices if you are using the same Apple ID. I managed to find my old purchase and installed Air Video HD on my new iPad. There are other apps on my iPad Air 2 that I could not find in the app store so I will have to reinstall them using this method.

==========

One of the other unavailable apps is OnSong 2020. I purchased that several years ago when I planned on auditioning with my church to play bass. However, I was sick at the time, and the previous music pastor was not very welcoming. I believe that was a $20 purchase and I was upset that the new version, OnSong 2022, is a subscription only product. Again, I was able to find and reinstall the old version, and now I need to transfer my songbook to the new iPad.

Reddit and China

People suck.

People suck a thousand times worse when they are on anonymous social media like Reddit.

I used to follow many subreddits (sub) about China and Taiwan, but I have removed them from my subscription list. Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) tries very hard to equate the party and the nation, all discussion ends up being political. It has spent billions of dollars on anti-Western propaganda, social media disinformation campaigns, and mass censorship worldwide. There is no way to discern whether a commentor is just pro-China, a CCP agent, or a paid shrill. If you look on Reddit, the biggest sub on China is /r/china. The population seems to be mostly ex-pats and they generally have a negative impression of the CCP. I get the sense that many enjoyed their time in China but hate what it has become under Xi Jinping. It also attracts a bunch of anti-Asian racists, wannabe commies, and people that usually post in /r/sino.

Sino is a strange sub. I cannot browse that sub for more than five minutes without getting angry or physically sick to my stomach. About half the posts praise the CCP by reposting media from China state owned media, and the other half are just anti-America rants. As a Chinese American from Taiwan, the entre sub is offensive to me. Their tagline is “News, Information, Discussion on all things China and Chinese Related” but any user that is slightly critical of the CCP is immediately banned. Just like the CCP.

There is a website called Map of Reddit where most subs are shown with lines connecting to other subs with similar posters. Here is an explanation from the creator:

Each dot is a subreddit. Two dots within the same cluster are usually close to each other if multiple users frequently leave comments on both subreddits.

Interestingly, if you look up /r/china and /r/sino, they are located in very different areas and connected to very different subs.

From the maps, it appears that /r/china posters are somewhat interested in East Asia since they also post to /r/taiwan, /r/japan, and other related subs. However, /r/sino users appear to be just a bunch of communists and socialists. I guess they only have a small passing interest in China. Since Chinese state media agrees with their worldview, they gather to feel good about communism and to shit on America. Just remember that if you are trying to get news about China from Reddit.

I tried reading some posts from /r/china recently and I think I will still continue my self-imposed ban on new and commentary from China.

Tesla Computer Issues

A strange thing happened to my Tesla this week. When I got in the car to drive to work Thursday morning, I noticed the energy meter was blank. Since it usually shows energy usage for the past thirty miles, the display is never blank. I then checked the trip data display, and it was showing zeros too. I have never reset the trip counter before.

When I got to work, all the displays above were still showing blank data even though I just drove forty miles. Interestingly, a third-party app called Tessie did not have any problems collecting trip data.

Since I did not know if this would cause other issues in the car, I set up an appointment with Tesla Service center in Irvine to have them check the car. I am sure it is a software glitch, though I did not update the car’s operating system recently.

This evening however, after dinner at a Thai restaurant with my parents and sister, the display came back suddenly. All my historical data is gone, but the car is tracking miles and energy usage. Strange. When the issue first appeared, I reset the console computer several times while driving, but it did not help. I am going to wait a few days to see if it keeps working before cancelling the service appointment.

No COVID Protection

I saw a post on Reddit about transplant patients being told to stop taking Evusheld. I just got my shots on December 1st. I did some more research and found even worse news.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday ended its emergency authorization for the only remaining Covid-19 antibody therapy cleared for use, saying variants that render it ineffective are now dominant in the United States.

The news about bebtelovimab makes official what has been anticipated for several weeks, as the Omicron sublineages BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 have been growing in prevalence. Still, it comes as a blow to both providers and patients who are at risk for more severe outcomes. The rapid evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus had already knocked out several other monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of Covid.

Eli Lilly, the maker of bebtelovimab, has stopped the commercial distribution of the treatment, the FDA said. Various companies are working on updated antibody therapies, but none appears close to being authorized.

https://www.statnews.com/2022/11/30/covid-evolution-wipes-out-another-antibody-treatment-threatening-the-countrys-medicine-cabinet/

The article goes on to state that Evusheld is also not effective against the new “BQ” variants: BQ.1 and XBB. BQ.1 is a subvariant of BA.5, which I got on the way back from Paris back in June. XBB is a combination of two BA.2 variants. BA.5 and BA.2 caused the recent bump in cases over the summer and is causing havoc in China now. I guess the two new mutations can evade injected antibodies.

This totally sucks for me. Due to anti-rejection medication, my response to COVID vaccines have been minimal, even though I just received my fifth shot, a bivariant booster. I also got both Evusheld and bebtelovimab this year, but evidently, they are not effective against BQ.1 and XBB. It is likely I will start working mostly from home again until there is updated medication available. 😱

In hindsight, I probably should not have attended our company’s party yesterday. It felt like there were 10,000 people in attendance.

Another Mask Mandate?

I have been slacking at work with regards to wearing a mask indoors. I still wear a KN94 mask when I go to crowded areas but have mostly been maskless at my desk. However, unlike in previous months, I have been going into the office almost every day. Now there is news that Los Angeles County may bring back an indoor mask mandate again. Let the whining begin…

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-12-02/how-close-is-l-a-county-to-new-covid-19-mask-mandate

In what has now become a pattern during the pandemic, coronavirus cases are rising as we enter the holiday season in L.A. County.

It is still far from clear how big a potential winter surge could be. Some officials are optimistic the wave will not be as bad as past seasons.

But officials warn that continued spikes in COVID-19 could bring a return to an indoor mask mandate.

Looking at the new case trend, the number continues to grow over time, though not very quickly. Maybe it is the coming flu season that has the public health officials worried?

The case rate in Orange County is lower. From the chart, Los Angeles County is averaging 3000+ cases daily, while Orange County is at 320. LAC has more people but only a bit over 3x OC so the infection rate is definitely much higher.

Evusheld Shots II

My nephrologist scheduled me for another round of Evusheld shots last week. This time there were no issues since it has been five months since I had COVID.

I received the shots at the cancer infusion center. This time it was a female nurse. I know they are all very professional, but I felt I had to pull down my pants more than the previous time. The shot locations definitely feel a bit lower down. They kept me for about 45 minutes after the shots to see if there were any adverse reactions. Other than a sore butt, everything was fine. This plus the bivalent vaccine booster from threes ago should help prevent against another COVID infection.

School Rankings

Each time we have an open requisition and receive candidate resumes, there is an argument about school reputation versus experience. Our CEO is the ultimate school snob. His philosophy is to hire the smartest students from the best schools and let them do their thing. Me, I really want to hire people with some experience, so I am not telling my analysts to not hit reply all and send email to 10,000 coworkers.

I have a new analyst starting tomorrow. He graduated from University of Illinios Urbana-Champaign (#41) and has about four and a half years of experience. I scanned through the US News & World Report National University Rankings and most of the finance team comes from the top 50 schools, while the accounting team comes from more local schools like Cal State Los Angeles/Long Beach/Fullerton/Dominguez Hills. There is nothing wrong with those schools, but our company discriminates against non-ranked schools when recruiting candidates.

==========

I graduated from university many years ago. Hopefully no one is judging my work based on ancient educational history, but my schools are still ranked #20 and #25.

https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/ucla-1315
https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/university-of-southern-california-1328

Since I attended USC for graduate school, I am unsure if the #25 ranking for undergraduate program applies. I will need to find specific rankings for my two master’s degree programs.

==========

Heh, there are rankings for everything.

Engineering Schools: USC Viterbi #15, UCLA Samueli #16

Business Schools: USC Marshall #19

It has been ~30 years since I attended university, so the current rankings have no relation to what the schools were like back then.

KARA Comeback

One of my favorite K-Pop groups got together to release a new song and perform at the 2022 MAMA Awards. The group has gone through many members at various times, but most of them came back.

This is one of their most famous songs, probably due to the butt dance.

I saw them perform this song live at the Hollywood Bowl back in 2010. That was over twelve years ago.

RIP Hara.

2022 Kidney Ultrasound

Photo by MART PRODUCTION on Pexels.com

I went in for a kidney ultrasound this morning and the results are already available. A reminder that my sister’s donated kidney has a cyst that is buried deep within the kidney. The transplant team decided to leave it in the kidney instead of removing it, which means I need to get annual kidney ultrasounds. However, the UCLA nephrologist did say during the last appointment that if everything is normal, they may not need any more ultrasounds.

My appointment was at 10:00 am. I arrived early to check in but was stuck behind a very slow-moving Cadillac in the parking structure. It took me almost fifteen minutes to park my car. Once registered, the process was quick, and I was done in thirty minutes. The results were available online after about two hours. I believe there are no issues but I need to wait for my nephrologist to explain it to me.

Impression: Unremarkable left pelvic renal transplant aside from a stable slightly complex subcentimeter cyst.

I hope unremarkable is the same as negative for whatever they were looking for.

==========

I stayed home after the ultrasound appointment. My intention was to work from home, but I ended up taking an eight-hour nap. I am exhausted from working eleven-hour days plus a two plus hour commute.

Spotify 2022 Wrapped

Spotify came out with their annual summary of your listening habits. There are no real surprises. I typically start my main K-Pop playlist when I get into the car, and the Top Songs listed are songs one, two, three, six, and eight of the playlist. Likewise, “What is Love” by TWICE is the first song, and my car will start with that song even though I have shuffle play enabled. This is the second year that BIBI has been my Top Artist.
